Reconceptualizing the Sakinah Family as a Preventive Framework Against Violence in Pesantren: A Hadith and Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah Analysis

The phenomenon of violence in educational environments, including pesantren, has become a serious concern, as practices of verbal, psychological, and physical violence can undermine personality development, mental health, and the values of ukhuwwah among students. This issue can be objectively examined from the perspectives of the Prophet’s ḥadīths and Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah. This study employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. The data utilized are secondary sources and are analyzed through descriptive analysis. The theoretical framework applied consists of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah theory, while the conclusions are drawn through a deductive approach. The findings indicate that, from the perspectives of Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah and the Prophet’s ḥadīths, the sakinah family holds strategic urgency in preventing violence within pesantren environments, as it constitutes the primary foundation for shaping children’s values, attitudes, and patterns of social relations. Through tranquility, affection, and mercy, the sakinah family instills non-violence, empathy, and respect for human dignity before students enter the pesantren structure. From a maqāṣidī standpoint, the sakinah family safeguards life (ḥifẓ al-nafs) by preventing the normalization of violence, intellect (ḥifẓ al-ʿaql) by fostering self-control and rational conflict resolution, honor (ḥifẓ al-ʿirḍ) by cultivating awareness of personal and others’ dignity, and religion (ḥifẓ al-dīn) by preserving Islam’s image as a religion of mercy. In line with the Prophet’s ḥadīths concerning responsibility, compassion, safety, and the prohibition of humiliating others, the sakinah family serves as a pre-discursive space that shields students from physical, verbal, and symbolic violence. With this foundation, pesantren can implement Islamic education in a more humane, civilized, and ethically grounded manner, consistent with Islam’s prophetic vision.
